经嘉木一说，我也觉得要说supported修饰basic laws似乎不太稳妥，但是要说supported修饰scientific conclusions我也一下转不过弯来。我觉得从语法上讲，supported有可能修饰的是understanding.

an understanding of basic laws这个短语重心在understanding, supported紧随其后，应该修饰understanding而不是basic laws.

如果supported要修饰主语scientific conclusions, 那么，我的感觉是，supported前面应当加一个逗号，就象这样

Scientific conclusions derive from an understanding of basic laws，supported by laboratory experiments, observations of nature, and　mathematical and computer modeling.

但是以上所述，我也没有十分把握。有空准备翻一下语法书。
