A woman preparing saw handles for saws to be exported to Tanzania.
Worker welding the frame of a corn drier designed by the brigade chairman.
Shaping bricks with a wooden plank before they are baked in a kiln.
11.
Two stilt dancers made up to perform in a satirical skit about the deposed Gang of Four. One (at top) represents Chiang Ch'ing (widow of Mao Tse-Tung). Another (below) represents Chang Ch'un-ch'iao, the leading ideologist of the clique.
Banned for almost ten years during the Chinese Cultural Revolution, the ancient art of stilt dancing has now been revived. From left to right they represent: Wang Hung-wen---he carries a hatchet to signify his ruthlessness; Chiang Ch'ing (Mao's widow)---she holds a deck of cards to imply a decadent life-style; Chang Ch'un-ch'iao---the fan is an old Chinese symbol of cunning and deceitfulness; Yao Wen-yuan---the brush symbolizes his domination of the propaganda apparatus during the Cultural Revolution.
