      在下(响应虎尾老师的号召,第一人称都用“在下”)写这个贴子的初衷,只是随便聊聊而已,没想到由此引起河里各位大虾的热烈讨论。看了各位老大的高论,有的赞同,有的有不同看法。特在此一并回复。

    1)对小学生的教育方法,是鼓励为主还是鼓励批评都需要的问题。在下以为,就小孩子而言,多鼓励绝对是利大于弊的。大家回忆一下,如果有小学、中学(甚至高中)都在一起的同学,是不是“差生”一直都差?记得在下读小学的时候,同学中也有比较调皮的,成绩不好,就被打上了差等生的烙印,结果一直都差下去,破罐子破摔。其实,小学阶段,智力发育都差不多,关键是要培养小学生对学习的兴趣和自信心,在下还是认为这比学到一些基础知识要重要得多。特别是看到女儿在美国上小学的经历,对此有了比较深刻的认识。

    2)美国教育体系培养出来的学生,嘴上功夫强,但基础知识不扎实,比不上中国的学生,在下认为这里可能有个误会。我们这一代从国内考出来的学生,不谦虚的说,都应该算是国内的顶尖学生吧。和美国本土的一般学生相比,当然是要优秀得多。但由此认为美国教育出来的学生比不上中国学生,却有失偏颇。国内一般大学中,混文凭的也大有人在,搞不懂y=aX的也不乏其人吧。

    3)如果能把中国教育和美国教育综合一下就完美了。这一点,其实已经部分地得到体现,并取得了显著的成绩。在下居住的这个密西根北部小城Troy,因为学区好(主要是高中),在这里买房居住的中国人越来越多,结果高中里的中国学生也一年比一年多。当家长们掌握了美国大学(特别是“常青藤联盟”的大学)的招生要求后,把接受中国十几年教育后的心得和美国的教育体系结合起来,通过指导、帮助下一代,使他们在高中学习中具有了得天独厚的优势,再加上中华民族与身具来的吃苦耐劳的品德,近几年,考上“常青藤联盟”的大学的中国孩子一年比一年多,美国中学已经难有作为了。更为可喜的是,报考医、药专业的中国孩子也多了起来,不再象我们这一代,只能靠工程技术安身立命。据说,“常青藤联盟”的大学已经开始限制每年招收华人子弟在总招收学生中的比率了。可惜的是,报考法律,政治的学生还很少。

    4)我们这里有一个华人协会举办的“College Forum”,每年邀请那些考上“常青藤联盟”大学和其它好大学的应届高中生给学弟学妹们介绍他们的成功经验。看着这些少年才俊们在台上侃侃而谈,让人赞叹不已,倍感欣慰和骄傲。以下就是今年在这个论坛上发言的学生背景简介,由此可以看到,考上美国的好大学所付出的艰辛和努力。为了保护隐私,删除了学生的姓名。

      Cranbrook Kingswood(私立学校):

      She will attend Harvard this fall. She was Student Council president and captain of the Varsity Swimming and Diving team. She is a National Merit Finalist, a Spanish National Examination Runner-up, and a Jayne Scholar. She is also an AP Scholar with Distinction, a Birmingham Observer & Eccentric Academic All-Star, and a member of the Cum Laude Society. She plays lacrosse, and volunteers at the Hispanic Community Service Center. This summer she assisted in stage managing the play, The Colored Museum, in Detroit and volunteered at a Hispanic Outreach summer camp in Pontiac. In her spare time, she enjoys dancing, traveling, shopping, and, of course, hanging out with her friends. She has an intense passion for warm weather and the beach, and would like someday to live in Europe.

      Novi高中:

      She will attend the Honors Program in Medical Education at Northwestern University in the fall. She is Summa Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa, an AP Scholar with Distinction, National Merit Finalist, and a member of the Novi News All-Area Academic Team 2007. She was also the Vice President of the Science Club and Teen Court, a CATS Freshmen Mentor, and acted as a chairperson for the South-East Michigan MUN Conference in 2005 and 2006. She was also a top ten finalist on both the district and state level in the 2005 and 2006 DECA competition. She is an accomplished pianist and a cross-country runner. In her spare time, she volunteered at Botsford General Hospital and Plymouth-Canton Chinese Learning Center and conducted research on lung inflammation at the University of Michigan. She also participated in the Phelex Foundation's Inner City Kids in China Program during the summer of 2006 and taught oral English at Minghou Second High School.

      West Bloomfield高中:

      she will be attending Harvard University in the fall. She is Summa Cum Laude. She began her high school career by becoming highly involved in politics. In the summer of her sophomore year, she interned for the MIGOP and put in enough work to merit a place at the 2004 Republican National Convention. Since then, she has been involved as a salaried member of Shelley Taub’s State Senate campaign, a key volunteer in Congressman Joe Knollenberg’s various Congressional campaigns, a vice-chair of the 9th district Teenage Republicans, and a Congressional Page in the US House of Representatives. To better provide a channel for other students to become involved in politics, she founded and chaired the Political Action Group at her high school. She has also been a devoted ballerina, an honored member of the Debate and Forensics teams, a volunteer for the Teen Court program, intern at Terry Barr Sales, a legal assistant for the Law Firm of Matz and Rubin, and a National Merit Scholar.

He was Co-President of Science Olympiad and Biology Club. He was also Vice President of Physics Club. He conducts Neuroscience research at the University of Michigan. He was also Captain of both the Varsity Cross Country and Varsity Track teams for two years, where he ran in National competitions.

      He will attend Stanford University. He is a Presidential Scholar Semifinalist, Siemens AP State Award Winner, National AP Scholar, National Merit Finalist, Intel Science Talent Search Finalist, USA Physics Olympiad Semifinalist, US Chemistry Olympiad National Finalist with Honors, Siemens Westinghouse Science Competition Semifinalist, Caltech Axline Scholar, and USA Biology Olympiad Semifinalist. He received 1st Place in National AGM Piano Competition, International Pricilla and Bart Bok Astronomy 1st Award, Bausch & Lomb Honorary Science Award, ACA Best All-Around Leadership and Scholarship, Grand Award at Science and Engineering Fair in Metropolitan Detroit, NASA Scholarship for Northwestern High School Summer Research Program (3 high school students in nation), Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) 1st Place and Best in Category, Intel ISEF Air Force Research 1st Award, Intel ISEF Army Research 1st Award, Seaborg Stockholm International Youth Science Seminar Award (25 in world), Individual 1st in Michigan Math Field Day, 2nd place in Ohio Brain Bee, Science Olympiad State Medalist, and MISMR Essay Competition Honorable Mention (top 7 in Michigan).       Photography Program, and in Cranbrook Summer Art Institute Painting Classes. His artwork has been exhibited in the Birmingham Student Our Town Art Exhibition and the Michigan Young at Art Exhibit. Furthermore, he took part in the International Academy’s 2006 Language Immersion Trip to Spain and in the same year was accepted into the Telluride Association Summer Program. Throughout his junior and senior year, he volunteered as a member of his subdivision’s Neighborhood Association as well as in the organization of many school events, such as sophomore career day. His main passions are languages, anthropology and cultural studies, art, and horticulture. He is fluent in English, Spanish, and German, and can read most Romance languages as well as some Dutch.
