In my experience, I still have to ask for something from others. I remember the
discrimination from local people: the staffs of hotel front desk rejected
to offer the room service, because the travelling agency that we followed had got a discount. The cashier of supermarket seldom gave me a smile and hello when
they took my convenience card. The bus driver was so impatient when he saw the
Chinese people waiting to get on... Most local people are nice, but there is
still discrimination - even university professors sometimes show their contempt in class (unintentionally).
We still have to "ask" for respect and fairness under some circumstance because Chinese is a poor country and most of Chinese people are not rich enough.
There is one thing called "class" / social status in U.S. and in the world. It
is still hard for Chinese to be in the first class at this moment.
