British author Jane Campbell once served as the translator of the Living Buddha Kalu Rinpoche (1905-1989) of Kagyupa. One day the Living Buddha, who was almost 80 years old, demanded that she should become his "Wisdom Woman". Jane Campbell was surprised, but had no choice but to comply. Ms. Campbell later was able to escape from Tibetan Buddhism, and her account gives us a glimpse into the contemporary Tibetan Buddhist practices regarding the "Wisdom Woman". Why Western women willingly became "Wisdom Women" and remained silent about the practice? First of all, the Living Buddha appeared to his believers as a god who wielded irresistible power. Secondly, women who became “Wisdom women”, because they “practiced” directly with the Living Buddha, enjoyed elevated status almost equal to that of goddesses in the small and closed circle of believers. “Wisdom Women” must swore an oath of secrecy. If the “Wisdom Women” broke the oath, they would die of madness and be condemned to hell for millennia! To intimidate her into submission, Kalu Rinpoche once told Jane Campbell that in one of his pre-incarnated lives, he has used magic curse to kill a woman who broke the oath of secrecy. According to Jane Campbell, such methods were very effective in the circle of contemporary Tibetan Buddhist practitioners. Although the “Wisdom Women” were worshipped like goddesses when they were “practicing” with the Living Buddha, however once used up they were discarded to be replaced by a newer batch of “Wisdom Women”. According to Jane Campbell, when Kalu Rinpoche was “practicing” with her, he was also “practicing” with another twenty-year woman who died of a sudden heart attack. This incident put Jane Campbell in such fear that she was completely cut off from the outside world and effectively became a sex slave to the Living Buddha.
According to anther British author Mary Finnigan, in her circle of Tibetan Buddhists, the Living Buddha “practiced” with several female disciples simultaneously, and led each of them to believe that she was the only one chosen by the Living Buddha. When Mary Finnigan was asked about how female Tibetan believers see such acts, she said “They felt honored and duty-bound to be chosen by the great Lama, I think those Tibetan women had no concept of sexual assault.”
