Connacher Shares Up On Oil-Sands Enthusiasm >CLL.T

TORONTO (Dow Jones)-Shares of Connacher Oil & Gas Ltd. (CLL.T) spiked on Monday, a week after the company announced results at its Great Divide oil-sands property in Alberta.
Robert Rose, an investment banker with Dominick & Dominick Securities, said increased international attention for the Alberta oil sands in general, and investor favor with the Deer Creek oil sands project in particular, has caused Connacher shares to move higher.
"People are injecting the numbers for Deer Creek and transposing them over to Connacher and coming up with numbers that are pretty fancy," Rose said.
In a press release issued Aug. 2, the company wrote that Great Divide has probable and possible reserves and resources of 311.2 million barrels of oil.
Rose said Connacher's position has been further improved by the increased possibility that it can finance the project without the help of a large senior oil company. Rose said discussions were held with larger companies but the prospective partners were looking for a 50-60% interest in the project.
Rose holds shares in Connacher and Dominick and Dominick has an investment-banking relationship with the company.
Connacher's Chief Executive Richard Gusella confirmed Rose's comments and said Connacher is "probably leaning toward keeping as big an interest as possible (in the project)."
Production at Great Divide is slated to begin early in 2006, Gusella said. While he said such a target was aggressive, he also said the company's smaller size gives it efficiency advantages - compared to larger companies - and that would help it make the early target date.
One analyst said that, once in production, the project can produce oil for 25 to 30 years. The analyst also attributed the spike in the share price to the shares catching-up with the potential value of the Great Divide project.
In Toronto Monday, the stock is up 39 Canadian cents, or 19%, to C$2.39 on 15.8 million shares.
