最近BELL实验室开展一系列公关工作.
先是在纽约时报让GERTNER写了一个大肆吹捧大贝尔时代的科研的报道.其中的有关历史的"舞蹈"实在太多:
1. 有关光纤通讯---
"Bell Labs also built the first fiber optic cable systems and subsequently created inventions to
enable gigabytes of data to zip around the globe."
BELL实验室在1972年还拒绝光纤通讯,主导的波导通讯是为了传输微波的空心波导. 1973年还在建设第一条传输微波的空心波导---宣称可视电话的未来就在空心波导. 而高锟早在1964年就提出光纤通信,康宁在1970年就拉出了第一圈低损耗单模光纤.后来BELL实验室又去支持多摸光纤,反对单模跨洋光纤.
2. 有关激光
"Two of its researchers were
awarded the first patent for a laser, and colleagues built a host of early prototypes. (Every
DVD player has a laser, about the size of a grain of rice, akin to the kind invented at Bell
Labs.)"
可惜第一台激光是BELL实验室最恨的MAIMAN发明的
第一台半导体激光是GE实验室发明的,第一个室温工作的半导体激光是苏联人发明的.
这两天居然CBS的早新闻也开始发掘"舞蹈"历史了.
什么第一台激光呀,光纤通信呀---谎言重复12遍估计世界就会相信了.

不过他是把当年的技术创新跟当下炒作的非死不可,鸟叫之类的创新比,不管对美国还是其他国家也算是个有意义的话题
