But I do not not have sufficient experience to reply a post outside the newbie's camp. Therefore I start a new post here.
The maniacal desire for an Olympic Game in Beijing started from 1991, the Asian Game. Before 1991, the western world closed doors to China. After 1991, gaps appeared on the door. That was a moment of change. And the Asian Game happened to be held at that particular moment. Though the game did offered an opportunity for the change to occur, the change could kick in by itself without the game. However, the Chinese leaders had an illusion that a bigger game, say, the Olympic Game, would play an more crucial role in the openning of China. Some scholars smelled it and presented "theories" to affirm the leaders' illusion: The Tokyo Olympic and Soeul Olympic happened to be the milestones of these two countries, and some countries started to make money out of holding the Olympic Game. Then the leaders made determination to use the Olympic as "monument" for the openning and development of China, and to use the game to make profit. Today we know both these two dreams will break. The "monument" turns out to be a slap from the western world, and the government will lose big trunk of good money on this game.
