The German army was arguably the most effective fighting formation of WWII. Even towards the end of the war, with German war production and supply crippled, they were still not to be underestimated.

The weapons used by the German army was a mixture of old and new. Apart from the excellent K98 bolt action rifle from the previous era, many revolutionary weapons also came out of the German arsenal. Just to list a few:

- MG34 machine gun and MG42 that is still in use today as the M3, with its design principles copied into many other weapons (eg M60);

- STG44 intermediate cartridge assault rifle that's the grand daddy of all modern day assault rifles;

- FG42 paratrooper's advanced assault rifle with selective fire and a straight through plastic stock. This design feature was later borrowed into the M16 assault rifle.

German army was also a master of battlefield tactics, with the revolutionary blitzkrieg that swept through most of Europe.
