yes, the American tax law system is very different from the Canadian one.
The Canadian tax law only gives you tax credit. Just google tax return form you will understand. The Canadian tax system is very biased again the high-salary-income people and not as friendly as the American one. There is no mortgage interest deduction too.
CASH-charity contribution does enjoy higher tax credits than the average deduction item tax credit.
In comparison, U.S. and UK tax laws are closer, and Canadian tax law more reflects its nature as the largest socialist nation in the world. (maybe second largest after France)
