Since 1974 the curious have questioned the Village about the DeFeo Family tragedy.

Here are the facts.

It is true that six people were killed and that Ronald DeFeo was convicted of six counts of murder.

It is true that the Lutz family bought the DeFeo house and lived in it for twenty-eight days.

The house was sold to a family that lived there for several years. The only "unnatural" thing they and the subsequent owners have encountered is the invasion of their privacy and property by scores of sightseers.

It is the opinion of a great many of the Village residents that the facts depicted in the books (and the movies to follow) were written entirely as a profit-making scheme.

In regard to the Village's reluctance to discuss the subject, this kind of publicity trivializes the death of the six members of the DeFeo family.

It is also a tremendous burden to the family that currently lives in the house to have strangers constantly at their door and on their property.

If after reading this you wonder why the Village does not capitalize on the house, please remember these were our friends and neighbors. To us it is a sad reminder of the tragedy.

As to Ronald DeFeo, he is still in prison.
