我有一个2002年买的IBM Thinkpad R30，256兆内存，30G硬盘。

装了Ubuntu 9.04以后，屏幕只用了中央一块，周围留了一寸左右的黑框。System->Preferences->Display 里面显示Monitor: Unknown，分辨率最高是800x600。

R30用的显卡是Trident video accelerator CyberBlade-Ai1 AGP，网上找了半天也没找到linux版本的驱动程序。我倒是不在意分辨率，800x600够用了，问题是怎么才能让Ubuntu全屏显示呢而不必更新显卡驱动程序呢？

在网上下载了十几个xorg.conf之后，终于有一个成功的将我的显示器分辩率调到了1024x768。

最新的xorg，可以不用xorg.conf，自动检测了。非常适合老显卡。

gentoo有专门的程序测试硬件，自动产生一个合适的xorg.conf。

ubuntu的检测能力只会更强的。任何linux没有什么程序是发行版专有的

确实的，只要去做，哪个发行版都一样。

问题就在这里，每个发行版的初衷是不一样的。ubuntu走的是为微软的模式，试图一切为用户包办，因此只要有一个例外，用户就不知道去哪里找了。而gentoo是头开始就让用户一切自己定制，它是在培训用户diy的能力。

所以我玩了一段时间ubuntu就转到gentoo去了。
