But infant carseat definitely can be and should be used after 3 months. The recommendation (law?) in US is 1year/20lb. My boy is always at 50%(average weight) and reached 20lb around 7 months.
You won't be carrying your baby around in the infant carseat after a while. After the baby gets big enough and can hold up her head, you can carry her in your arms or with stroller (with or without the carseat). There is no need to carry the extra weight of the carseat yourself. Our infant carseat stays in the car 99% of the time now.
So for safety reason you want to keep using the back-facing (you mentioned seeing it front-facing in the store, that can not be right) infant carseat until the baby reaches the proper age/weight. Also there is really no reason for you to have to switch to a umbrella stroller after 1 or 2 years, unless you prefer the light weight over more storage space. For me, once the baby gets old enough, it's only a personal choice between the different strollers. If the baby gets to big to fit in, she is probably ready to walk on her own feet by then.
