你要是夫妻俩都还在上学，下面还有打算要孩子，省吃俭用存下的几万块钱，还是继续在银行存着吧。你一两年内就面临着毕业找工作的不确定性和有孩子的新增经济负担，应该谨慎。工作了再考虑其他风险更大的投资。

我建议你们明后年工作了之后，这些存款可以当首付在工作的地方买自住房子。一般而言，没有比买（住五年以上的，合适大小的）自住房更好的投资了，因为省下了房租。按过去几十年长期平均的投资回报率，（长期的）自住房〉股票〉公司债券〉政府债券〉银行存款。

半年前买股票（或者是下面鹰击长空 MM推荐的ETF）是好时候，现在还是买偏保守的混合基金吧。特别您的时间可能比较短。

俺要是您，留5千到1万现金（在短期CD 或 money market 账户），其它的钱可以考虑投在Target Retirement funds（income or 2005）。俺个人喜欢 Vanguard Target Retirement Income fund　VTINX: (美股24%，国际股6%，一般债券45%，TIPS　20%，现金5%）　或者　 Vanguard Target Retirement 2005 fund VTOVX:（美股31%，国际股8%，一般债券43%，TIPS 15%，现金3%）。

不过，不比CD，只要是投资，就会有风险，自己要做功课的。

1. your investment horizon is short (2-3 years)

2. you want a reasonable return (>= 2%)

3. you're a very conservative(risk averse) investor , and

4. you won't be watching your portfolio closely

I suggest you look at market index ETFs such as SPY, VTI, QQQQ etc. If you have confidence in one sector such as energy, pharma, or tech, then pick a sector ETF. For intro to ETF and comparison with mutual funds etc., please see links below (2nd one is Chinese)

And finally, I think you'd be better off doing long-term investing in China if you're sure you'll be going back in 2-3 years. Of course you need a trusted and experienced agent, that's crucial.
