The Sino-America first contact was 1949 at Poland. The US initiated, and at first Mao refused to talk because Mao was afraid that by doing so he would piss off the USSR. However the meeting was started and without concrete resolution. China and the US mutually regreted at later days.

There is a book in the US detailed the situation, but I read it long time ago but I could not find it now.
