The Winner Within

我要建议姚明去读一读Pat Riley 的书 The winner within.

Not long after the Knicks' game-six win, I made a game-seven prediction to Dave Checketts: "Jordan will collect ten free throws in the first period. And they'll suddenly put Patrick Ewing on the bench-with a third foul early in the second period or else a fourth foul early in the third period." I was close enough: Jordan got eight. We couldn't put a hand on him. Every time he put the ball on the floor and and we touched him, however slightly, the officials sent him to the line. Every time I questioned the officials, they told me to shut up. Patrick had only one foul in the entire first half. By early in the third quarter we were only three points back, with a chance at one of the great upsets in playoff history. Suddenly, in the space of one minute and thirty-five seconds, Patrick drew three consecutive calls. Four minutes into the period, he had to ride the bench. When the quarter ended, we were down by eighteen. Game and series lost. Jordan drew more than fouls. He drew star treatment. Either consciously or unconsciously, the officials tailored game seven to his style of play. We lost, but we had extended the Bulls, on their way to a back-to-back championship, more convincingly than any other team in the league. We reminded a championship team-and Chicago truly was one-that they had to take on all comers and all styles. And they did. We paid our dues. The upstart always has to overcome more, just as a start-up business has to struggle with so many more challenges than an established one. Upstarts don't win championships unless they score an absolute knockout. Upstarts win the right to come back next time and compete for the championship. That right is the key.

Riley's Rule of the Stacked Deck:

“When you're playing against a stacked deck, compete even harder. Show the world how much you'll fight for the winner's circle. If you do, someday the cellophane will crackle off a fresh pack, one that belongs to you, and the cards will be stacked in your favor ..."

The Winner Within's Ladder of Evolution

? From nobody to UPSTART

? From upstart to CONTENDER

? From contender to WINNER

? From winner to CHAMPION

? From champion to DYNASTY
