家园 Canadian banks are going

to do the same stupid things as their American cousins once did.

Canadian mortgage liabilities keep on piling up. Canadians are accumulating more and more HELOC debts. Income growth in the whole Canada (except for Alberta) is crawling, while people need to maintain their living standards: thus more debt is the right solution.

CMHC did the right thing to stop insuring HELOC loans. It is less probable that Canadian gov. will have to rescue CMHC since the regulators are quite vigilant on the housing market.

Anyway, BMO started the rush to the bottom with the shameless 2.99% 5-year program to grab market share. All others followed and then the net effect is: every bank becomes a loser.

HOUSING PRICE IN CANADA HAS REACHED ITS HISTORICAL TOP. And there is no more fuel to justify further hike in housing price. Canadian regulators can only pray that the current peace can last as long as it can.

Why smart people are so angry at BMO? Because they know that the housing market is a volcano to burst.
