今天正好看到老外也在讨论这个问题,觉得有趣,摘了两篇,让大家看看老外是怎么看待这个问题的。

Just as a General Statement, The people I often see complaining about the price of gas are the ones who very often have the "aquafina", or other brand name bottled water in their hands. These are also the people who you rarely see in the office with a Bagged lunch. I too Am not thrilled with the current Gas prices (here in Vt Reaching over $2.41 for premium) and remember just a few years ago when $15 would fill an almost empty tank. but I also usually Bag my lunch, and make up for the difference in other ways. Buy a Gallon of bottled water and pour it into an aquafina bottle for the road or take the whole gallon of water with you to work. The Comment about Starbucks is a good example: Brew a pot of something better at home like Zabars and take a Thermos of hot coffee with you to work or buy the Dunkin donuts coffee-in-a-box. Starbucks has to be like $15-$20/Gallon... and we complain about prices of gas and milk.
For me, one more bagged lunch/week makes up the difference in the cost of gas.
I don't see how as a country, we can really complain too much about the price of Gas when we practically have the lowest gas prices in the world. Is it just that we have become that out of touch with the rest of the planet?
Just out of Curiosity, do people actually think the price of gas will go down? Not just Fluctuate and slowly rise over time? Don't they think about that when they buy a car?

I personally have mixed feelings about the high gas prices. I like the high gas prices because its brings us as a country closer to the reality with the rest of the world and hopefully the public will force the carmakers to offer more fuel efficient vehicles. However at the same time I do miss paying only $1.50 for premium and even less for regular.
You are right though gas prices will only go up. With the rise of China and India demand will go up significantly.
I understand that even at $2+ / gallon, gas is still a bargain compared to what other countries pay but the main problem I have is the rate of price increases is outpacing inflation by an order of magnitude. Compound that with the increased cost of food, health care, and education; brown bagging lunch and cutting back at visits to Starbucks may not even help. I don't know if you're single but all these costs rise exponentially if you have a family and dependent parents.

Well, I usual, me I would like to watch gas prices being multiplied by 10 in the US.
Maybe that would bring a little bit of reason to your country. Because for sure you are not going to stop asking for bigger and more powerfull engines only because some stupid scientists say that CO2 is responsible of global warming, climate change and such things...
I can say that I was shocked by the average power for a car in the US... More than 220Hp ... It's really crazy... but I understand now why you are responsible of more than 25% of the whole planet CO2 emissions while being less than 4% of the total population...
So let's keep on rising it. The more the better.

A factor of 10 would be too much. $20 USD per gallon? That would most definitely cause the U.S. economy to grind to a halt. If the U.S. economy slows considerably other economies would suffer as well. That would not be good for anyone. Let's take China for example. China's economy is red hot now but remember which country buys most of their goods? The U.S. If Americans can longer buy Chinese goods because they have to pay for gas what happens to the red hot Chinese economy? It slows down too. You may argue well China can export to other countries. Unfortunately I don't think China can sustain such a high growth economy without the large U.S. market.

Uhm... first of all, the 10 factor was just an exageration, it was meant to mean "I don't care how much it raises", not to be taken literally.
Now, I am pretty well aware that with gas prices going up the economy is going to drop, you really do not need to make extensive economy studies to be aware of it.
But, the point is that : "I don't care". Because it would certainly get better on the long term. Btw, the futur in China is not in the export market, but in their internal one. Even know, the country that buys most Chinese Goods is certainly China, not the US. But if China has to slow down, and the US drop, in order to assure OUR long term futur, that's pretty fine to me.
So, let's raise the oil price until Americans start really caring about energy waste. Or simply try to convince them that it may be nice to start doing it even if the oil prices do not climb. But I really doubt that you'll achieve that without money involved.
Anyway, nobody here is going to change the oil price. We are just giving our opinions on the fact that oil prices are going up. Some people are unhappy about it, I just happened to be VERY happy. After all, the US is the land of freedom, isn't it ??
