也许这个条件是当时能达成的最好条件了。中华民国和日本签定的中日和约里本质上连台湾的主权都没有解决。日本只是放棄對於台灣、澎湖列島、西沙群島及南沙群島之主權。而米国当时对台湾的地位是主权未决定论。台湾只是一个中米联合管理地带。所以在中华人民共和国和日本签定的条约里，日本明确承认台湾归属中国，的确是一个大的进步。也许这是 中日关系先于中米关系的原由。中日关系的建立和日本对台湾的主权归属的承认让米在和中国的建交谈判中比较被动。所以建交的时候先日后米，对中国来说的确是赚了。从长远来说，对离间日米，不能不说没有影响。对于当时的日本来说，靠中日关系来获得更大的国际活动空间也是个很有希望的奋斗方向。

后来的中米联合公报里，台湾地位明确无误地确立了。

". The Chinese reaffirmed its position: The Taiwan question is the crucial question obstructing the normalization of relations between China and the United States; the Government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legal government of China; Taiwan is a province of China which has long been returned to the motherland; the liberation of Taiwan is China's internal affair in which no other country has the right to interfere; and all U.S. forces and military installations must be withdrawn from Taiwan. The Chinese Government firmly opposes any activities which aim at the creation of "one China, one Taiwan," "one China, two governments," "two Chinas," and "independent Taiwan" or advocate that "the status of Taiwan remains to be determined."

The U.S. side declared: The United States acknowledges that all Chinese on either side of the Taiwan Strait maintain there is but one China and that Taiwan is a part of China. The United States Government does not challenge that position. It reaffirms its interest in a peaceful settlement of the Taiwan question by the Chinese them-selves. With this prospect in mind, it affirms the ultimate objective of the withdrawal of all U.S. forces and military installations from Taiwan. In the meantime, it will progressively reduce its forces and military installations on Taiwan as the tension in the area diminishes. "
