United Nations votes for Libyan no-fly zone
Those countries who voted for the no-fly zone were;
Permanent members: United States, Britain and France
Non-permanent members: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Colombia, Gabon, Lebanon, Nigeria, Portugal, and South Africa.
Those who abstained were;
Permanent members: Russia and China.
Non-permanent members: Germany, Brazil and India.
A no-fly zone is now expected to be put in place within a few days if all goes smoothly with the preparations and if the UN acts swiftly to give an official go-ahead, says The Guardian.
The BBC echoed earlier press reports saying that if a resolution was voted, American, British and French planes could begin attacking Libyan military targets "within hours."
American UN ambassador Susan Rice has addressed the Council, declaring that "The future of Libya should be decided by the people of Libya. The United States stands with the Libyan people in their quest for their universal human rights."
Another American official, speaking just after a briefing for U.S. Senate members, said that Jordan, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates were among possible participants, in a bid to show that other countries in the region were willing to back the anti-Gaddafi rebels.
