The Taft-Hartley Act of 1947 barred both labor unions and corporations from making expenditures and contributions in Federal elections.
The Court's decision struck down a provision of the McCain-Feingold Act that prevented corporations, for-profit and not-for-profit, and unions from spending freely from their own treasuries in the final days of political campaigns, and overruled two previous cases, Austin v. Michigan Chamber of Commerce (1990) and McConnell v. FEC (2002), which had been decided by the Rehnquist Court.
