it is now vertically integrated with various players concentrated on one part.
Garmin and Tom are no longer hardware+software makers. This change happened around 2003-2005.
Now they concentrate on hardware making (actually Garmin outsourced some hardware manufacturing to many Taiwanese firms, that's why you will see lots of GPS makers now in China with most are never well-known before).
Softwares are made by two main software makers. I do not see huge differences there.
Magellan (named after the global explorers and Indian genocider) used to be the pioneer in the GPS industry. Now it is dying. Do not touch a dying product.
In America/Canada, buy Garmin, because American firm knows its market better than a foreigner.
In Europe, buy TomTom (a dutch firm), because only Europeans can figure out their nasty winding lanes between cities and in the cities.
