Kerry Widens Lead in Newsweek Election Poll After Convention

July 31 (Bloomberg) -- U.S. Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry widened his lead in a Newsweek poll over incumbent George W. Bush following his party convention in Boston.

The survey of 1,010 registered voters conducted Thursday and Friday found Kerry and vice presidential candidate, Senator John Edwards of North Carolina, led Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney 52 percent to 44 percent. The poll of registered voters has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

A July 8-9 poll of 1,001 registered voters found the Kerry- Edwards ticket leading Bush-Cheney by 51 percent to 45 percent. That poll also had the same margin of error.

In a three-way race including independent candidate Ralph Nader, the most recent poll showed the Democratic ticket got 49 percent support, compared with Bush's 42 percent and Nader's 3 percent.

Voters were asked to say whom they thought was more likely to win, regardless of their preference. Forty-four percent of respondents answered Kerry, and 43 said Bush. Thirteen percent said they couldn't predict the outcome of the race.

The poll also found Bush's approval rating fell to 45 percent from 48 percent in the July 8-9 poll. For this question on the approval rating, the survey also included 180 adults who weren't registered to vote. The margin of error for observations drawn from this group is plus or minus 3 percentage points.

Princeton Survey Research Associates International interviewed people for the poll. The results appear in the August 9 issue of Newsweek.
