In Times Square, Donna Lhopitault stood in line at a Toys “R” Us for four hours to secure the Nintendo Wii video game system that her children covet. She paid $250 — about half the price she had seen charged on various Web sites.

Ms. Lhopitault, a 38-year-old financial adviser from Smithtown, N.Y., said she used to splurge at high-end stores like F. A. O. Schwarz before the prices of gas and home heating oil surged.

“This year, I am sticking with Best Buy, Toys “R” Us and Target,” she said. “That’s where the deals are.”
