HONG KONG - Bear Stearns’ long-running attempts to set up an investment banking joint venture in China may turn into a lifeline to save it from its fast-worsening credit crisis.
The floundering U.S. investment bank initiated talks with China’s powerful CITIC Group before the mortgage market meltdown, according to a person close to the Beijing-based conglomerate. CITIC Group is now negotiating to take a minority stake in Bear Stearns (nyse: BSC - news - people ), the source told Forbes.com.
