Death of Hu Yaobang in 1989 gave rise to student demonstrations

China announced plans Tuesday to commemorate the birthday of deposed leader Hu Yaobang, whose death prompted mourning that led to pro-democracy protests in Tiananmen Square in 1989.

The move suggests the Chinese leadership plans to rehabilitate the reputation of Hu, who was fired in 1987 as general secretary of the ruling Communist Party's central committee.

"Commemorative activities marking the 90th anniversary of the birth of Hu Yaobang will be held in Beijing in mid-November," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao said at a news briefing.

"China's central leadership will attend," Liu said.

He said he did not have details on the exact date of the event or which Chinese leaders would attend.

China's then-paramount leader Deng Xiaoping ousted Hu for allowing student pro-democracy unrest.

When Hu died in April 1989, students who admired his reformist record paid their respects in Tiananmen Square. The outpouring of sympathy led to demonstrations that were crushed by the Chinese military on the night of June 3, 1989, in which hundreds, perhaps thousands, were killed.

The Chinese government has not publicly commemorated Hu since.
