At a party in Dolmabahçe palace in 1932, Dr Reşit Galip, the excitable former member of the Independence Tribunal, criticized the education minister Esat Mehmet who had stopped women teachers from appearing on the stage of the Ankara People’s House. Mustafa Kemal asked Reşit Galip to show more respect for a minister who had been his teacher. Emboldened by rakı, Reşit Galip refused, and Mustafa Kemal asked him to leave the table. ‘No,’ said Reşit Galip, ‘this is not your table, it belongs to the nation.’ ‘In that case,’ replied Mustafa Kemal, ‘I shall go myself.’ And he left, followed by the other guests.1 Nevertheless, he was so impressed by Reşit Galip’s boldness and his support for the reforms that, shortly afterwards, he imposed him on İsmet as minister of education.
