The surname of the hero is Dugovics. We can recognize from the name that this guy was of Serbian/Croatian origin; no wonder since the battle was at "Nándorfehérvár" (name of the fortress and city in 1456, at the time of the battle), currently Belgrade. Apart from this, Dugovics may have well been of a real Hungarian as descendant of foreign ancestors(although may be not even "foreign" since Blegrade that time probably was part of the Hungarian kingdom; in Wikipedia,org, you can find more details). Anyway, the sacrifice was of importance because that time if the attacking army could put their own flag to the top of the attacked fortress, it meant already that they have occuopied the fortress. The Turkish (terminology of that time: Ottomán) soldier in red holds a stock in his right hand with a horsetail on it and with a halfmoon at the the top of the stock (this stock corresponds to the Turkish flag of that time). As to your second inquiry, the commanding general of the Nándorfehérvár fortress was János Hunyady (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Hunyadi).Here you can also read that the rings of bells in every church in Europe refer to the siege of Nándorfehérvár in 1456. Unfortunately, due to an infection because of an epidemy in his troops, three weeks after this victory, he died. His son was Mátyás Hunyady (Matthias Corvinus),one of our greatest kings ever (ruling: 1457/58-1490). Unfortunately, in lack of a legal son as successor, Hungary turned into a chaos of competing landlords who should be the new king and this has weakened the country to the extent that the Ottoman troops could easily defeat the Hungarian army at Mohács, Southern Hungary, in 1526 and could take control over nearly half of current Hungary's territory (inculding Buda and Pest, that time still separate cities, with Buda as acting capital)for one and hlaf century.
