some american rednecks have the same view : it's average joe's sword, it doesn't require too much training, anyone can pick it up and do a lot damage, just like a shotgun.
w.r.t japanese katana, unless you are a well-trained and skilled swordsman, you will more likely hurt yourself before you can do any damage to your opponents.
