The UN Food and Agricultural Organization estimates the country needs to import 1.10 million metric tons of cereals to meet its food requirements for 2009/10 (about 25 percent of total needs), but economic constraints mean DPRK will struggle to meet its food import needs.

The chronic food shortages have had a dramatic impact on the health and wellbeing of people in the DPRK and while some progress has been made, the country has high rates of under-nutrition compared with its regional neighbours. Preliminary results from a survey led by UNICEF indicate that stunting rates for children under 5 have decreased from 37% to 32% and wasting rates have decreased from 7% to 5 %. About 28% of pregnant and breast-feeding women are undernourished.

WFP food assistance is provided to 65 counties/districts in 7 provinces, including a significant part of the northeast, considered as the most vulnerable to food shortages in DPRK. The long-standing principle of “No access-No food” remains in place and WFP international staff members continuously monitor the food-supply chain down to provincial and county warehouses and final distribution points.
