家园 correction 据说美国立国的时候曾有两种语言选择

据说美国立国的时候曾有两种语言选择作为国语,英语和德语,都是日耳曼语族

--No. English is always THE language. Germans were not welcome in US because they served as the mercenary for the British empire and fought against the continental army. (George Washington's famous Trenton battle was targeted at the British mercenaries from Hess, Germany). When America was founded, Germany was a highly divided nation with a primitive economy. Germans were perceived as poor, uneducated bastards (please read Ben Franklin's comment on Germans). BTW, those Germans fleed the old world because of religious persecution as well as economic reasons.

--German immigrants flooded into America in early 19th century, a bit earlier than the Irish. The American civil wars were fought with many German immigrants serving in the Federal Army. Some American friends told me that their ancestors were off the boat and immediately put to the battlefield. Some Germans could not even understand their officer's English orders.

--Germans had major presence in the following states in America: Pennsylvania,Illionois, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Texas (yes, Texas!). It is easy to identify them--just check their last name and the local beer industry. If you learn some German, you can easily understand the meaning of their names.

Eisenhower (former American-British alliance supreme commander)

=Eisenhauser

=Eisen(=iron)+hauser(=houwen=cut/chop)

--if you check Ike's history, his grandpa immigrated to a small town in Texas. And he was from Germany. ^-^.

--German was taught in Pennsylvania as one major language (since there are so many German Americans there), but during WWII, it was eliminated from school syllabi. During 1943-1945, being an German-American was NOT something to be proud of...

--There were also many Germans in Atlantic provinces of Canada (Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and PEI). They were imported during similar period, early 19th century.
