We all need time to grow up. However, the cost of this growing is very huge. Democracy, in the eyes of students at that time, is so great, that it could solve all problems of China. In fact, none of them truly know what is democracy and how it is actually manipulated, except those dry stories from text books. Most of the college students involved with that movement at that time, were a bunch of spoiled guys, and did take themselves as something like elites, carrying the mission of saving China. They challenged the law and order of the nation, which in fact is forbiden everywhere. They called people to stand up for democray, while the tools are lies, cheating, or rumours.

Don't neglect the power of VOA and BBC.
