Thank you for your note. We have received many phone calls and emails today on this subject and have removed the cartoon from the web site.

I very much regret that people have taken offense about the cartoon, or believe — wrongly — that Jeff does not care about the suffering in China. To the contrary, Jeff cares deeply, and it was from that impulse that he drew the cartoon in the first place.

In no way did he intend to have people believe he was making light of the earthquake, which is a great tragedy.

Cartoons, by their very nature, are controversial, and sometimes upsetting. But I can assure you that Jeff did not mean to somehow put the earthquake in any kind of humorous light, and I personally did not read it that way.

You have my personal apology that you were upset by this matter. Please know that we take your complaints very seriously.
