--The GDP of Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) has increased at annual rates of 12% or higher for the past 7 years, reaching ¥34.2 billion (US$5 billion) in 2007, with per capita GDP over ¥120,000 (US$17 thousand). In the past 5 years, total financial assistance provided to Tibet by the central government reached ¥94.7 billion (US$12 billion). In addition, investment in infrastructure construction by the central government in the same period reached ¥60.1 billion (US$9 billion). The 117 major projects planned for the tenth "Five-Year Plan" period have all been completed, most notably the completion of the Qinghai-Tibet railroad. The infrastructure in Tibet has been greatly improved.

--Until the end of 2007, 612 counties in TAR (89.6% of total) has been connected by highways. Every county is connected by telephone. Over 70% of counties are served by the postal service. 1.02 million herdsmen in Tibet have been newly provided with clean, safe drinking water. After two years of implementing housing projects, over 590 thousand farmers and herdsmen, making up about 110 thousand families, have moved into new homes. In 2007 average per capita income for Tibetan farmers and herdsmen have reached ¥2,788 (US$400) after double-digit annual growth in each of the past 5 years.

--Elementary school enrollment rate has reached 98.2%, junior high school enrollment rate has reached 90.7%. Elementary and junior high school students in the farming and herding regions receive free room, board and tuition. Tibet is among the first regions in China to have provided free, mandatory education to all school-aged children. A healthcare system based on free treatment is available to all farmers and herdsmen, medical subsidies have been increased to ¥100 (US$17) per person per year. Tibet is among the first regions in China to have reached full medical insurance coverage for all of its residents in cities and towns.

--Average life expectancy in Tibet has improved from 35.5 years immediately after liberation (1950) to current level of 67 years. Population of ethnic Tibetans increased from 1.2 million in 1964 to over 2.5 million today, accounting for over 95% of Tibetan population. Tibet is also among the first regions in China to have a minimum living standard guarantee program, covering the 230 thousand farmers and herdsmen living in poverty (annual income less than ¥800 - US$110)

In the past 20 years, the central government has spent over ¥700 million for maintenance and upkeep of monasteries, historic sites and facilities of religion, editing and publication of "Tibetan Tripitaka" based in Tibetan language, and recording and publication of the oral history "Epic of King Gesar". Through efforts such as these, Tibetan history and culture are preserved and carried forward.
